We think that a community should be a better place for having one of our businesses there. We try to be good citizens and work positively for the areas in which we operate in a number of ways. |

Charitable Giving We give 1% of our profits, as a minimum to charitable causes annually, in addition to support “in kind”. A charity committee comprising members of the shareholding family and colleagues from within the business meet quarterly to guide our charitable giving. The principal charity being supported at present is Hull Community Church. This is a broad based charity supporting the community in a wide variety of ways. Our donations have helped support the weekly running of the Kingstown Friendship Club, where elderly people are brought to the centre and fed, often on Aunt Bessie’s products, and then entertained for the afternoon. We have supported Rhema, which works with children excluded from school, seeking to ensure that they continue to have a purpose. Other principal charities supported recently are listed below. We do give special favour to requests that have some element of employee involvement as we look to provide support in the areas in which we operate. Additional charities supported during 2007/08 include:
In 2007/08, 32 other donations were made to charities in our communities that were recommended by employees. The monetary value of these donations was £10,075.

The Outward Bound Trust “THANK YOU!! I’ve had such an amazing time and I would highly recommend otherto go on the course, because I learnt so many new skills to take into life, work and school, and I met so many great people” We have recently become a sponsor of The Outward Bound Trust. The Trust’s mission is to unlock the potential in young people through discovery and adventure in the wild with the mountains, lakes, rivers and sea as its classroom. Their young people’s centres, based in North Wales, the Lake District and the Scottish Highlands, provide inspiring backdrops to their personal development courses. The Trust works with a huge range of young people and helps them to develop essential life skills. Participants on an Outward Bound® course work together to overcome a series of outdoor challenges; in doing so, they develop self-confidence, their sense of responsibility and are encouraged to work together to achieve something greater than they ever thought possible for themselves. It’s creating and harnessing this passion, energy and self-belief that can influence young people to take control of their lives. Last year, over 27,000 young people benefited from an Outward Bound experience..The Trust is committed to reaching as many young people as possible, regardless of their financial circumstances. The charity focuses directly on improving the wellbeing of young people and giving them a brighter future: their work has never been as relevant as it is today because it is often those very young people who are unable to afford Outward Bound that would most benefit from the experience. The Outward Bound Trust raises charitable donations to support youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds for whom this experience is truly life changing. The William Jackson Food Group has just become the newest member of The Patron’s Company, the Trust’s network of corporate supporters. William Jackson Food Group and The Outward Bound Trust will develop a programme to assist disadvantaged young people from the communities of the company’s key business locations in the coming months.
People to be proud of This is a way for William Jackson Food Group to recognise and applaud the effort made by employees and members of the Retired Association for the work they do in their spare time to help the wider community. The people chosen to receive this recognition will be the dinner guests of the group at the annual company-sponsored race meeting in Beverley in July, where they will each be presented with a plaque of recognition and a cheque reward as an extra ‘thank you’.
